KOLKATA: Airport officials said a gunshot was heard from the watchtower beside airport’s Gate 5 near Birati at 5.19am. Colleagues and officials found an injured Vishnu with his service rifle beside him.
He was first attended by the airport’s medical unit and then taken to Charnock Hospital. “The patient came with bullet injuries and was put on ventilation.
He was about to undergo a surgery when he had a cardiac arrest. He was given CPR and revived around 8.30am. He subsequently succumbed to his injuries,” a senior hospital official said.
According to some of his colleagues, Vishnu was seeking leave to go home but neither police nor airport officials confirmed this. “It’s a tragic incident. But flyers and flight services were not affected,” said an airport official. The watchtower is away from the airport’s terminal building.
CISF is tasked with various jobs, including guarding the airport, controlling access, securing the walls, frisking passengers, scanning cabin bags as well as managing segregation points and queues.
