Coles Victoria Park East Australia’s second highest selling store for hot cross buns for Easter 2024

If you’re spending Easter at Victoria Park this year, you can almost guarantee you’ll be offered a hot cross bun.

Shoppers in the suburb clearly enjoy an Easter treat with new data showing they are among the biggest consumers of hot cross buns in the country.

The figures from Coles show shoppers at the Victoria Park East store had bought a whopping 25,800 packs of hot cross buns by Tuesday.

The only Coles store where more of the treats were sold was Taylors Hill Bakery in Victoria, where 26,000 packs of hot cross buns were sold.

And it seems most of them don’t want to mess with tradition. Most of the buns sold in Australia this Easter have been fruit flavoured, while chocolate buns were a close second.

Coles is expecting to sell 70 million hot cross buns this Easter, including 21 million this weekend alone.

While it might be an Easter treat, the supermarket giant divided shoppers by putting hot cross buns on shelves as early as Boxing Day last year.

In 2022, Coles sold more than 2.5 million hot cross buns in the week to December 31.

Hot cross buns are likely to be among an Australia-wide shift towards bakery treats during the cost of living crisis.

According to numbers provided by Westpac from their DataX program, Aussies spent 8 per cent more with bakeries in January and February compared with the same period last year.
