Russian operatives were found operating within the NATO headquarters, conducting activities deemed more aligned with intelligence work than diplomatic affairs.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg confirmed this breach, indicating a significant security concern within the alliance.

"We have expelled Russian personnel from the NATO headquarters. We found that they were conducting activities that were not diplomatic but rather intelligence work," Stoltenberg said in an interview with German daily BILD.

The news highlights the pervasive threat posed by Russia, with Stoltenberg stressing that similar actions have been taken by NATO allies, reflecting the seriousness of the situation.

Furthermore, Stoltenberg emphasised the longstanding infiltration of Russian intelligence services in European countries, a matter that NATO allies are closely monitoring.

Measures are being implemented to stop illegal activities by Russian intelligence both within and between NATO member states.

The incident has reignited discussions regarding the necessity for a unified response to Russian aggression, particularly in light of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Stoltenberg reiterated NATO's pivotal role in defending Europe, emphasising its mission to prevent wars rather than engage in them.

"The purpose of NATO is not to wage war. The purpose of NATO is to prevent wars," Stoltenberg said, stressing the alliance's role as the cornerstone of European security.

As tensions persist, Stoltenberg reaffirmed the importance of unity between North America and Europe, emphasising the collective strength they possess.

"When we stand together, we are secure," he concluded.
