A lucky bloke casually picking up his lunch at a grocery shop last month left the shop with a $1million (£788k) lottery ticket.

Single dad Brant Edgington was passing through the veg store in Fremont, Nebraska to buy a premade salad for lunch, and absent-mindedly decided to play the Mega Millions for the March 22 drawing, according to Nebraska Lottery.

“I don’t play all that often,” Edgington said in a statement announcing his win. “As a single parent, baloney is more important, financially.”

Edgington admitted he wasn’t expecting to buy a ticket during his quick pit stop and said he only plays when the jackpot total gets high, despite his dad and grandfather both being avid Mega Millions and Powerball players.

When he returned to the store, Edgington reportedly ran into issues and had to get a shop assistant to help run his ticket through the Check-a-Ticket scanner.

“[The assistant] disappeared for a minute,” he said. “Then a different lady came up with her and they just stared at me. She told me, ‘Don’t pass out when I tell you this.’”

The lottery winner 'wasn't sure' if he'll play again

According to state lottery officials, Edgington’s chances of winning $1 million while playing Mega Millions are 1 in 12,607,306. The father’s numbers happened to match all five winning numbers (3, 8, 31, 35, 44), but not the Mega Ball (16).

Edgington admitted he’s not sure if he’ll continue playing the lottery after his huge win. He claimed his prize on April 5.

Although Edgington got lucky, it’s often not the case for the other millions of folk who hedge their bets. Last month 23-year-old Nicole Makrigannis narrowly missed out on winning £3.6million after all of her chosen numbers were just one more than the winning digits.

Makrigannis described her cigarette-paper-thin margin of defeat as "tragically funny".
