Powerball ticket worth $50K sold in N.J as jackpot jumps to $78 million

A lottery player in New Jersey bought a Powerball ticket worth $50,000 for Monday’s drawing using the Jackpocket app, officials said.

The third-prize ticket matched four numbers plus the Powerball, the New Jersey Lottery said.

No one across the country hit Monday’s $67 million jackpot, pushing the jackpot for Wednesday’s drawing to an estimated $78 million with a cash option of $36.5 million. There were also no second-prize, $1 million tickets sold.

Monday’s winning numbers were: 7, 16, 41, 56 and 61. The Powerball drawn was 23, with a Power Play of 3X.

In addition, no one won the secondary $10 million Double Play drawing. Those winning number were: 3, 25, 52, 60 and 64. The Double Play number drawn was 17. There were also no second-prize tickets worth $500,000 purchased nationally.

The odds of hitting the Powerball jackpot are 292,201,388 to 1. A player who buys a $2 ticket has about a 1 in 11,688,053 chance to match five numbers and win at least $1 million, while the odds are 913,129 to 1 to win a third prize of at least $50,000.

Powerball drawings are held each Monday, Wednesday and Saturday in 45 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Tuesday’s Mega Millions jackpot is worth an estimated $148 million with a cash option of $67.8 million.
