An inquest has opened into the death of a 24-year-old man who was unable to be revived after being spotted floating face down in the sea at Exmouth beach. The short hearing confirmed Ionut Datcu, who was born on January 23, 2000, in Romania, lived in Chapel Street, Tiverton.

He passed away in the sea at Exmouth by Queens Drive on March 30 at 11.40am. Ionut was said to be single and worked as a night shift hygiene cleaner.

Brief details of the circumstances surrounding his death were provided by senior coroner Philip Spinney who opened the inquest. He said: "A member public was walking his dog when he spotted him face down in the water about 10 metres from the beach. He was pulled to the shore and CPR was commenced.

"Paramedics attended and he was confirmed deceased. He was dressed in boxer shorts.

"His vehicle was found nearby containing his clothing. No cause of death has been given at this time."

The inquest was adjourned for a date yet to be confirmed.
