Coach Chip Kelly struck a package deal with Grayson Murphy. To the untrained eye, it’s difficult to distinguish between the UCLA edge rushers who transferred from North Texas last spring. Grayson, the 6-foot-3, 260-pound defensive powerhouse from Dallas, Texas, not only dominates the field but is also a star in the classroom, majoring in African American Studies. 

He’s been a regular on the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll, thanks to his stellar academic record. His first season with the Bruins was nothing short of spectacular—starting all 13 games, racking up 9.0 tackles for loss and 5.0 sacks. Before joining UCLA, he left a solid mark at North Texas, where he snagged 38 tackles, 12.5 for loss, and 8.5 sacks back in 2021. However, on closer inspection of their background and familial relationships, one discovers that Grayson and Gabriel Murphy are not just a dual on-the-field force but are more closely related. Both hail from a family rooted strongly in sports. 

Introducing Chris and Shaunielle Murphy 

Grayson Murphy and his twin brother Gabriel grew up in suburban Dallas, just a stone’s throw from North Texas where they started their college careers. Born to Chris and Shaunielle Murphy, the twins were a surprise addition to the family. The brothers are not carbon copies of each other, however. Grayson, the junior defensive lineman for UCLA, sports a robust frame and bears a distinctive scar above his left eye, adding to his rugged on-field persona.

Gabriel, on the other hand, stands out with his slightly darker dyed curls, a shade their mother couldn’t quite match between them. Both chose to start their athletic and academic pursuits at North Texas, a decision that kept them close to home—close enough to bring laundry home and return with baskets filled with home-cooked meals. The twins’ transition from North Texas to UCLA marked a new chapter, yet their bond remained grounded in the strong family values instilled by their parents from a young age. Grayson’s imposing presence on the field is a testament to more than just physical training; it reflects the enduring support and care from a family that has cheered him every step of the way.

2024 NFL landing spots for Grayson Murphy

UCLA’s standout Junior Defensive Lineman is making waves as a potential NFL draft pick. Examining his prospects, the Carolina Panthers appear to be a good fit, needing to strengthen their offense around quarterback Bryce Young. The Panthers’ current tight end lineup lacks depth, which could make Murphy, under the guidance of coach Dave Canales, a crucial asset.
