'She’s taking care of me': Louisville man wins $225K on lottery just after mother died
A Louisville man won $225,000 on the lottery in the midst of mourning his mother.The Kentucky Lottery said the man, who wishes to remain anonymous, told them he had just returned from out of the country seeing his mother before she died when his wife suggested getting out of the house to get his mind off things.That's when they bought some lottery tickets. Being off schedule from traveling, the man said he woke up at 4 a.m. the following day, sipped his coffee and checked his lottery tickets. That’s when he discovered he had matched all five numbers from the March 25 drawing to win the game’s top prize of $225,000. The Louisville man claimed his prize at Kentucky Lottery headquarters just hours after finding out he won. “I checked it at least five times. It’s really strange,” he told lottery officials. “I guess she’s watching.”The man said he hasn’t told anyone yet. “Everything happened so fast,” he told the lottery. “I got a call, flew out to see my mom before she passed, we had the funeral, and then I got back, and then this happened.”The man said he paid for the funeral arrangements, so the unexpected money is helpful, but he’ll need time to figure out what to do with the winnings. The Jefferson County man walked away with a check for $162,001.44 after taxes. “She’s taking care of me,” he said.Thorntons will receive $2,250 for selling the winning ticket.
