Taylor Swift is at it again: She has the world singing, listening and talking about every song in her new album, “The Tortured Poets Department,” a 31-song 11th album released Friday.
In it, she has something for NFL fans, too. “The Alchemy” includes football allusions, likely inspired by boyfriend Travis Kelce, the star tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs. But she doesn’t stop there: It seems she calls out someone, whom she doesn’t name — with fans quick to theorize it is former Kadarius Toney, the current Chiefs receiver and former New York Giants first-round bust.
“So when I touch down/ Call the amateurs and cut ‘em from the team,” she sings.
Toney, the Giants’ 20th overall pick in 2021, was made inactive for the Chiefs’ Super Bowl, the seventh consecutive game he was benched. The last time Chiefs fans saw Toney was on Dec. 17 in Week 15, when he had a drop that led to an interception and a frustrated quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
This came after the previous week when he lined up offside and wiped out a touchdown he scored after catching a lateral from Kelce. With Toney unrepentant after that loss to the Buffalo Bills, teammates, including Mahomes, covered up for him with ridiculous excuses — even though different camera angles showed that Toney lined up incorrectly and did not adjust before the ball was snapped.
The Giants sent Toney to Kansas City for a third- and sixth-round draft pick in 2022. He was a distraction and couldn’t stay healthy, let alone be productive when he was on the field. Even Mahomes couldn’t fix him, Toney recording 27 catches in 13 games last season. He has 760 career yards receiving on 82 catches.
Chiefs general manager Brett Veach told reporters Friday that the franchise has never “stopped believing in” Toney.
