The Seventh Annual Jim Thorpe Independent Film Festival in Carbon County has kicked off.

The 4-day Cinematic and Musical event has a line up of eighty-five short films from around the world and live music courtesy of the festival's partner, the Great Circles. One of the movies played in tonight's showing was the musically focused feature Dandelion.

"People come from literally all over the country to attend this film festival. The types of films we present are from all genres," said Tony Martinez, content director and production supervisor. "If you create the film, you have a chance at getting in this film festival. We have romance, comedy, horror, the whole nine. Every genre of filmmaking makes it into this film festival.

"Our tagline is ‘eyes and minds wide open’ and that’s how we like to approach the whole event. People can come to this event and see stuff they wouldn’t necessarily pick to see on Netflix or go to the Cineplex to see," said Todd Morris, founder of the Jim Thorpe Independent Film Festival. "They can appreciate these interesting, acclaimed, international films here in their own backyard.”

Friday will be the Filmmaker Gala.

Closing night is Sunday.
