Wrexham strolled to a win that left 10-man hosts Crewe Alexandra sweating on their League Two play-off hopes.

Paul Mullin set up Ollie Palmer for his first league goal since November to put Wrexham on course.

Palmer then returned the favour for Mullin to double Wrexham's lead by the break before Andy Cannon added a third after Crewe defender Ryan Cooney was sent off for handball.

Victory saw already-promoted Wrexham reach a club league record 85 points.

It surpassed their previous best of 84 points in 2002-3 with a game remaining.

Crewe, who are fifth, will keep a keen eye on the day's later games before preparing for their final scheduled league game against Colchester United on Saturday, 27 April.

Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson said: "It's great to get the record points total but the most important thing was that we approached the game in the right way after last weekend.

"We had a lot of pats on the back last weekend and a great celebration but the boys showed what great professionals they are.

"It was a strong performance both with and without the ball and we ere always in control of the game. We're all really pleased for Ollie to get the goal after all his work for the team."

After starting the year with Mullin badly injured, the first match ended with Notts, Crawley and Swindon in the top 3. Stockport and Wrexham were 8th and 9th, while Doncaster sat in 21st with only 8 pts from first 10, but have now won 8 in a row. Quite the reversal of fortunes in many cases. Every team has had losses with injured starters, so good luck to Crewe at holding onto a playoff spot.

What are you on about? Stockport County hit top spot 14th of October and remained there all season apart from 4 weeks dropping to 2nd in late February early March when 10 first teams players were ruled out with injury.

Well done Wrexham. I only caught the second half but happy to see some good effort from Fletcher and Marriott, just missing that final finish on target. Crewe were okay counter attacking but seemed to have lost confidence in the final pass/shot, a great shot from Crewe just over the bar. Happy to see WAFC get 4-1 6-0 and 3-0 before the match v Stockport next Saturday at home.

Yhe challenge between Cooney and Mullin was 50/50 with no offence either side. When Cooney handled, Mullin appeared free so a red card was correct.

Cooney handled because he got more than a hefty shove in the back from mulling,which in anybody else's book is a foul.
But not this ref, who bottled it in the first half by failing to send off McLean,who grabbed Rowe round the neck. Perhaps he was scared of the bad publicity from Hollywood fc fans

Shame how we have lost the plan, work rate and players. But we are in 5th on a tiny budget not by luck, money or fortunate ref decisions. Yeah it’s gone bad at the end, but Bell deserves to be on the shortlist for league 2 manager of the year. Proud of what the club has done despite the weekly trolling comments we get, and I don’t care what you have to say. ATID

Well ... after drowning sorrows with some Balvenie 12 year old ... not all is lost ... The Alex need 1 point and they will defo be in the playoffs ... clearly there are a bunch more permutations where The Alex make the play offs where they seal no more points ... it's in our hands folks ....
