LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- After returning from a trip out of the country to be with his dying mother, a Louisville man won thousands from the Kentucky Lottery.
In a news release, the man, who wants to remain anonymous, said his wife suggested he get out of the house and buy some lottery tickets at a Thorntons to get his mind off the passing of his mother.
Being off schedule from the trip, the man woke up at 4 a.m., sipped some coffee and checked the numbers on his Cash Ball 225 ticket. Not only did he win. He won twice on the same ticket.
He discovered that he had five numbers that matched the March 25 drawing to win $225,000. He also won $2 from matching two numbers on two other lines on the ticket.
“I checked it at least five times. It’s really strange,” the man told lottery officials. “I guess she’s watching.”
The man said he paid for the funeral arrangements, so the money helped. But he is not sure what he'll do with the rest of his winnings.
After taxes, the man walked away with a check for $162,001.44. Still thinking of his mother, he said "she's taking care of me."
Thorntons will receive $2,250 for selling the ticket.
