LANSING, MI -- Cain Bice sure is glad he threw a little extra money into buying Powerball tickets recently as he ended up winning a $1 million prize in the drawing held on April 6.

“I bought a few more Powerball tickets than I usually do since the jackpot was over $1 billion,” said Bice, 31, of Union. “The morning after the drawing, I logged into my Michigan Lottery account and saw a lot of zeros in my account balance. I rubbed my eyes thinking I was still dreaming. Once I realized I had really won $1 million, I started shouting in excitement!

“My wife asked what was going on, so I showed her my phone with the winning amount on the screen. Once I was able to calm down and regain my composure, we called our family to tell them the good news!”

Bice matched all five white numbers selected -- 22-27-44-52-69 -- in the drawing to win the $1 million prize. He bought the ticket through the Michigan Lottery website. With his winnings, Bice says he plans on buying a house, a new car and taking a trip to Disney World.

“Winning is unreal. I keep waiting to wake up because it still feels like a dream,” Bice said.

The last players from Michigan to win a Mega Millions or Powerball jackpot is the Wolverine FLL lottery club which claimed a $1.05 billion jackpot in March 2021. With their winnings, the group plans to give back to the community.

And while they were lucky winners, it’s smart for players to check their tickets immediately as a Mega Millions winner worth $1 million sold in Southfield in 2023 went unclaimed. The money instead went to the state’s School Aid Fund.
