Fahadh Faasil Explains The Success Model of Malayalam Cinema: 'We Make Unique Films Unlike'

Kochi: The Malayalam film industry is no doubt the most underrated in India after releasing films like Manjummel Boys, Aadujeevitham, Varshangalkku Shesham, Premalu, and Aavesham has taken the cinema industry by storm. This industry has been gradually gaining recognition in the film trade by releasing quality content on OTT and in theatres as well. Why Malayalam Films are Gaining Attention in Theatres?

During a recent conversation with Galatta Plus, Baradwaj Rangan and Fahadh Faasil, shared their opinion on how the Mollywood industry is looking forward to putting on top-notch films for the audience. The two discussed the growth of Malayalam cinema’s business model. Baradwaj noted that while the industry has seen success, it still lacks the strong support of OTT platforms, unlike other regions in India. Faasil explained that Malayalam films typically need to perform well in theaters first to secure streaming deals, whereas 80 percent of OTT agreements in other parts of India happen before filming even begins.

Fahadh Faasil also elaborates on the unique business model of Malayalam cinema, highlighting its differences from other film industries in India. Fahad said, “We need to release the film, prove the film, and then…I think that way we are more self-sufficient now. We understand the importance of making a film that is different and will make noise (sic).” The Aavesham actor concludes by saying, “We are trying to make films that sort of reach out first and then the rest of the business and exposure the film happens. Make it a second priority and make the noise first (sic).”

Fahadh Faasil’s latest film, Aavesham, by director Jithu Madhavan, has been making waves recently. The movie tells the story of three college freshmen who, after a humiliating incident at the hands of seniors embark on a path of revenge. To even the odds, they join forces with a notorious local gangster named Ranga.

Fahadh Faasil’s Professional Front

Fahad Faasil will be shortly making an appearance in Pushpa 2: The Rule, a pan-India film. The actor will be sharing the silver lining with Telugu actor Allu Arjun and Rashmika Mandanna. Helmed by Sukumar, Pushpa 2 is expected to be released on August 15th, 2024, with its first song coming out soon.
