Darrell Green played 20 seasons with the Washington Redskins, helping them win two Super Bowls during his Pro Football Hall of Fame career. Now the franchise is planning to retire his No. 28 jersey.

The legendary cornerback is only the fifth player in the history of the team, now called the Commanders, to receive the honor, joining Sean Taylor, Sammy Baugh, Sonny Jurgensen and Bobby Mitchell.

“I’m humbly grateful,” Green said on the team’s website Thursday. “I feel like crying just thinking about it right now. This means a lot to me.”

The team surprised the seven-time Pro Bowler with the news when he was at the team facility for a pre-draft promotional video. Family members and team officials poured into the room to congratulate the Ageless Wonder.

“I would’ve never dreamed this,” Green said. “I was so shocked. It’s almost like it breathed life into me. I have never been so surprised, shocked. My head is still spinning, but I am a million percent humbled.”

During his Washington career from 1983 to 2002, Green set an NFL record with 19 straight seasons with an interception. Known for his speed and longevity, the 5-foot-9 cornerback played in 295 games, the most by any defensive player.

“Retiring Darrell Green’s jersey symbolizes our commitment to preserving the rich history and tradition of our franchise,” owner Josh Harris said in a statement. “His presence as one of the greatest players to ever wear the burgundy and gold will forever be felt at Commanders Field, serving as an inspiration to current and future generations.”

No Washington players have worn No. 28 since Green’s retirement in 2002. The four-time All-Pro said he was glad to stay with Washington for his whole career.

“God had early on put it within my heart not to go somewhere else. … I made a commitment to that,” the 1996 NFL Man of the Year said. “You talk about a win, I ain’t done nothing but win in my life.”
