DES MOINES — Sydney Maue is now a high-jump record holder at two schools.
And very nearly a Drake Relays champion at the second.
A junior at Mount Vernon High School, Maue cleared 5 feet, 7 inches Thursday afternoon at Drake Stadium.
That effort matched Jaidyn Sellers of Panorama, but Sellers was the champion based on fewer misses.
Sellers cleared 5-7 on her second attempt; Maue on her third.
“Adrenaline gave me a little boost,” Maue said. “It’s been a little bit of a struggle lately, but 5-7 today felt really good.”
Maue also cleared 5-7 at a sophomore, at Center Point-Urbana. A volleyball commit at the University of Arkansas, Maue transferred from CPU to Mount Vernon shortly after volleyball season last fall.
“It’s going really well (at Mount Vernon),” Maue said. “The people are really nice. I knew a lot of the girls from club volleyball.”
Maia Denge-Hagen of Linn-Mar and HLV’s Ema Roberts tied for fifth at 5-5.
A senior, Denge-Hagen is a rookie in the high jump this year, and a quick study. She cleared 5-8 at a meet last winter, and that was enough to get her a spot on the Iowa State University roster next season.
“When I started, I thought, ‘This is fun,” Denge-Hagen said. “I’m happy to be in this position. It’s so exciting. I’m so grateful to find something I’m great at.”
Roberts is a junior.
Addison Dorenkamp of West Des Moines Valley set a Drake record — and an all-time Iowa best — in the 3,000 meters, blazing through it alone in 9:23.69.
That broke the all-time record of 9:24.67, set by Linn-Mar’s Stephanie Jenks in 2014.
Dorenkamp has signed with the University of Alabama.
Charlee Morton of Hampton-Dumont/CAL repeated as shot put champion with a heave of 41 feet, 4 inches. If Morton wins the discus Friday, she becomes the first Iowa girl to win both throwing events twice.
