Detector dog Sam sniffs out cannabis concealed in vacuum-packed packages at Dublin Airport

The illicit drugs, which have an estimated value of €285,000, were seized on Wednesday

A man has been arrested and charged in relation to a significant drugs seizure at Dublin Airport earlier this week.

According to Revenue, more than 14kgs of herbal cannabis were found concealed in vacuum-packed packages within the baggage of a passenger who had disembarked from a flight from Spain.

"On Wednesday, as a result of risk profiling and with the assistance of detector dog Sam (pictured below), Revenue officers seized over 14.2 kgs of herbal cannabis with an estimated value of approximately €285,000," said a spokesperson.

Following the seizure, a man, aged in his 40s, was arrested by members of An Garda Síochána. He was detained and questioned at a garda station in Dublin and has since been charged.

In an update this morning, gardai confirmed the man is due to be brought before the courts at the Criminal Courts of Justice this Friday.

Both Revenue and gardai say investigations arising from the seizure are ongoing.

"This seizure is part of Revenue's ongoing operations targeting organised crime groups and the importation, sale and supply of illegal drugs. If businesses, or members of the public, have any information regarding smuggling, they can contact Revenue in confidence on 1800 295 295," said a Revenue spokesperson.
