Howard High School students graduated the Erlanger Institute of Healthcare and Innovation as part of the Future Ready Institutes of Hamilton County on Thursday.

All eleven women were on the path for four years of high school.

"Many of the students will end up working for Erlanger and we also will continue to support them as they pursue their post-secondary opportunities at college," said Michelle Powell, Health Innovation Coordinator at Erlanger Health System.

All of the students have already received multiple certificates from their classes.

"While in this institute, I've had the opportunity to earn my CPR certification, watch live surgeries, and participate in hands-on training," says graduating student Shaniya Mikes.

On Thursday, April 25, all students were pinned and earned their certificate of completion.

The students spent time both in the classroom and in the hospital doing hands-on experiences.

"This is my sixth year with the program. I really have an emotional investment in the students. I spend time with them in the classroom and here while they participate in the clinical experiences," says Powell.

Graduating student Shaniya Mikes says she knew she wanted to do the program since she was in the 8th grade as she watched her sister be part of the program's first graduating class.

"I have witnessed firsthand the transformation of my sister, who in just two years became a skilled tech process technician and found true passion in her career choice," says Mikes.

Mikes says the Future Ready Institute has prepared her for when she enters college. Now, she knows what her next step will be.

"Being a part of this institute has been a source of immense pride for me, and has provided numerous opportunities and has open doors for myself and countless other students," says Mikes.

While leaders of the program have left a lasting impression on the students, these young women have done just the same for their teachers.

"Every year I say, I'm not going to cry, but I do every time," says Powell.
