The notification for the fifth phase of Lok Sabha elections, which will see 13 seats in Maharashtra, including six in Mumbai, go to the polls, was issued on Friday allowing candidates to start filing nominations.
On Friday, only one candidate, BJP’s Mihir Kotecha, filed his nomination at the Mumbai suburban collectorate office. The last day for filing nominations in Mumbai is May 4.
Mumbai has six constituencies divided into two different collectorates — city and suburban. While two constituencies, Mumbai South and Mumbai South Central, fall under the city division, four constituencies — Mumbai North Central, Mumbai North East, Mumbai North West and Mumbai North — fall under the jurisdiction of suburban collectorate.
Kotecha filed his nomination in the suburban collectorate’s office at Bandra. However, the city collectorate’s office didn’t see a single nomination being filed on the first day.
“Even though nobody filed nominations on the first day, 43 forms for South Central constituency were collected by 24 people, while 69 forms for Mumbai South constituency were collected by 25 people on the first day,” said an official from the collectorate’s office.
Kotecha has been fielded by the BJP as part of the Mahayuti alliance from Mumbai North East constituency. Mumbai North candidate Union minister Piyush Goyal is expected to file his nomination on April 30.
Currently, candidates have been announced from five constituencies of Mumbai by at least one party. From Mumbai South constituency, candidates are yet to be announced from the ruling and opposing alliances.
Mumbai city has 24.59 lakh voters, while in the suburbs there are 74 lakh voters.
