New homes are going up quickly on the southeast side of DeLand.
Calls for help have increased by 25% at DeLand Fire Station 83. This percentage is expected to grow as more people move to the area. As the need for emergency services increases, the actual facilities themselves are also due for some upgrades.
"We're working with an architect to design the expansion of Station 83," DeLand Fire Chief Todd Allen said.
Allen said the city council recently approved $90,000 to get started on the project. This is for their fire station off East Taylor Road.
"So planning that out to make sure that we have an additional unit," he said. "To make sure that our response times don't increase, that we're meeting the needs of the community, we're meeting the needs of the people in this area, is the reason for the expansion and right now."
This is needed to keep response time under 6 minutes.
Engineer EMT Jordan Anderson agrees.
"I'm looking forward to it," he said. "They're talking about putting another truck out here. A crew of three, you know, potentially maybe more out here. And I think it's going to provide a better service there with all the development going."
Chief Allen said they hope to have the architectural rendering by the summer.
They'll then determine the cost, put it out to bid, and hopefully, by the first of the year, they break ground.
