Woman shines with pani puri in Masterchef Australia but desis aren’t happy – know why

New Delhi: If you are in India, you know that Indians thrive on street food and one of their favourites is and will always be pani puri. It is a beloved street food in India and is a culinary delight that tantalizes taste buds with its burst of flavors and textures. Pani puri wasn’t done making Indians drool and now it has also reached global audiences. Recently, an Indian-origin woman named Sumeet Saigal made pani puri during a task in Masterchef Australia, and oh, it created magic!

Contestant Sumeet Saigal left an indelible mark on MasterChef Australia 16 with her remarkable pani puri dish that captivated the judges’ palates. In a viral promo clip of the food-based show, the 46-year-old contestant showcased the art of enjoying pani puri to the judges. She was seen demonstrating the delicate process of breaking it open and filling it with a tantalizing mix of potato, mint-coriander chutney and finally topping it with the date-tamarind chutney. The judges were left awestruck, showering Sumeet with praise and applause while her fellow contestants also cheered in support. Watch the viral promo clip below:

However, while the Masterchef Australia judges were left impressed by what Sumeet served to them, desis seemed to be unimpressed by the potato mix that she made as they felt that there should be more masalas in the potato mix. Several social media users were, however, also proud that Sumeet put pani puri on the global map.

Pani puri is a combination of tangy water and bite-sized crispy hollow shells made of aata or sooji. These shells are filled with a medley of spicy, tangy, and savory ingredients. The filling typically consists of mashed potatoes, chickpeas, tamarind chutney and a sprinkle of aromatic spices like chaat masala. They are then dipped in flavourful water to complete the dish.
