The 77th yearly Cannes Film Festival is set to be held from May 14 to May 25 during which an enthralling display of film prowess will be exhibited. A notable person from America who happens to be both a producer as well as an actress by profession, Greta Gerwig, will be the jury president at the primary contest while Camille Cottin from France is expected to host the opening and shutdown events. According to a press statement, Shyam Benegal's award-winning 1976 feature film – Manthan, produced by five lakh farmers of Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), has been selected for screening at the 77th Cannes Film Festival 2024.
This renowned visual phenomenon revolves around the revolutionary milk cooperative movement championed by Dr Verghese Kurien, the acclaimed father of the White Revolution in India. The enthusiasm about the 4k restoration made by GCMMF (Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation) towards their 50 years of existence is another reason why Manthan holds an important place on their list of commemorated events.
“To commemorate the milestone, the federation joined hands with the Film Heritage Foundation, a not-for-profit organization, to restore Manthan in 4K. The 4K restoration of Manthan has been selected for the official red-carpet world premiere at the upcoming Cannes Film Festival in May. Manthan is the only Indian film to be selected under the Cannes Classic section of the festival this year,” GCMMF stated.
