Margaret Gifford Wemmert ‘Muggs,’ 97, led a life full of volunteerism

Margaret Gifford Wemmert, “Muggs,” 97, passed away at her home on March 21, 2024. A life-long resident of Racine County, she was born on March 30, 1926, the daughter of W. Allen and Jeanette Pugh Gifford.

Margaret had an idyllic childhood growing up on the Gifford farm with her four siblings: Kay, John, Mary, and Ruth, all preceding her in death. She graduated in 1944 from Park High School and attended UW-Madison for two years.

She met her husband, Edward “Eddie” Wemmert, when they both worked for Margaret’s father at Progressive Dairy. They married on May 15, 1948. Edward preceded her death on April 30, 2004. They had four children: John (Kandy Lynn), Patricia (Harry) Maughan, William (Shelley Harden), and Thomas (Judy).

Margaret led a life filled with volunteerism. She was involved with the PTA and her children’s classrooms at Trautwein Elementary School. In the Racine Unified School District, she was a health aid at Case High School and a classroom/office volunteer at West Ridge Elementary and Mitchell Middle School.

She spent many years volunteering with the Red Cross, training people in first aid and CPR, and serving on committees and the board of directors. Margaret donated her blood on a regular basis.

She was active in Mount Pleasant affairs, serving on various committees. Margaret worked for Lincoln Lutheran Home, coordinating the Meals on Wheels program for many years. She enjoyed organizing her Class of ’44 reunions and kept in contact with her classmates.

Margaret loved playing golf with her husband and then league friends, where she got a birdie at age 93 at Johnson Park. Reading, puzzles and games were a part of her daily routine. Margaret traveled the world with her sisters and friends. She loved her home, family and friends. She will be deeply missed.

Margaret is survived by her children, their spouses, nine grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews from both the Gifford and Wemmert families.

There are no services planned at this time.

Memorials in Margaret’s name may be made to a charity of one’s choice or the Wisconsin Humane Society-Racine Campus.

In the last weeks of her life, Margaret had compassionate care from Aurora Home Care, Aurora Hospice Care and Home Instead, for which she and her family are very thankful.
