In other news, Mumbai as well as Thane and Raigad are set to reel under a heatwave throughout Monday with severe climate likely extending to Tuesday, reported the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD). A yellow alert for the region was issued by the weather agency on Sunday as temperatures are expected to oscillate between 38 degree celsius to 39 degree celsius. Sunil Kamble, director of IMD, Mumbai told The Indian Express that the temperature in Thane will remain around 40 degrees. âThe city is experiencing this spike owing to a combination of developments. We are already receiving north easterly winds that increase the temperature. Besides, there is wind discontinuity and also high pressure area over part of Maharashtra.”
Meanwhile, police have registered a case against 25 office-bearers of the Mumbai Agriculture Produce Market Committee at Vashi in Navi Mumbai for allegedly indulging in irregularities leading to losses of more than Rs 62 crore to the APMC, reported PTI. From 2008 to 2013, the accused had taken certain decisions which allegedly resulted in these losses, an official told the news agency.
Flying activities banned in Shivaji Park, adjoining areas for May 1 statehood celebrations: Police
Activities using the airspace over the sprawling Shivaji Park and several areas in the vicinity of the iconic ground in Mumbai have been banned in view of Maharashtra Day statehood celebrations on May 1, a police official said on Monday. The event sees a ceremonial parade attended by dignitaries as well as thousands of citizens, he said.
"A prohibitory order banning flying activities has been issued under section 144 of Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) and will remain in force in the jurisdiction of Mahim, Shivaji Park, Dadar and Worli police stations all through the day on May 1," the official said. (PTI)
Peon working at Maharashtra ministerâs office stabbed to death in Mulund, 5 arrested
The Mulund police recently arrested five people in connection with the murder of a peon working at the office of a senior minister of the Maharashtra government.
The deceased, identified as Akshay Narvekar, 30, succumbed to the injuries he sustained while his friend Akash Sable, 30, is still undergoing treatment. The police said the accused and the deceased had an argument over clearing the bill at a chicken shop.
As per the Mulund police, the incident took place on Sunday night between 9-9.30 pm when Narvekar and Sable had gone to the chicken shop owned by the accused Imran Khan, 27, and his brother Salim Khan, 29. The police said the two sides got into an argument following which the siblings along with three others attacked Narvekar and Sable with rods and choppers and the latter fell unconscious.

Commuters on Harbour Line walk on tracks amid disruptions caused by derailment
Suburban commuters in Mumbai were forced to walk on tracks as local trains remained halted for hours following a disruption on the Harbour Line on Monday.
A trolley from one of the coaches of a CSMT-bound local train from Panvel derailed as it pulled into platform number 2 around 11.43 am. No passengers were injured.
The derailment caused bunching of suburban trains, forcing commuters to walk on the tracks to reach the nearest stations. CSMT-bound trains were terminated at Masjid station.

Sources said the BJP has planned the rallies in these constituencies as the party faces tough challenges, unlike the 2014 and 2019 elections when it won comfortably.
While the BJP said the rallies are being held due to increasing public demand and as a part of the party’s outreach strategy, the Opposition claimed the BJP is in a “panic mode” and was, therefore, banking on rallies by PM Modi.

Mumbai local train derails at CSMT; services affected on Harbour Line
A coach of a local train on the Harbour Line derailed at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) here on Monday morning, and no passengers were injured, a spokesperson of the Central Railway said.
A trolley from one of the coaches of a CSMT-bound local train from Panvel derailed as it pulled into platform number 2 around 11.35 am, the official said.
There was no report of injuries to passengers in the affected compartment, he said.
The derailment, however, disrupted local train services on the Harbour Line, and the CSMT-bound trains were terminated at Masjid station, the official said.
The Harbour Line services will be operational from and to Wadala station, he said, adding that the restoration work is underway and trains on the Main Line will remain unaffected.

Former Mumbai police commissioner and ex-Maharashtra director general of police Sanjay Pandey is likely to contest the Lok Sabha election as an Independent candidate from the Mumbai North Central parliamentary seat.
Considered close to Uddhav Thackeray, Pandey was arrested in June 2022 by central agencies in connection with the National Stock Exchange (NSE) phone-tapping case. When he was the Mumbai police commissioner, Thackeray was chief minister of Maharashtra in the MVA government.

Will mid-way course correction help placate onion farmers in north Maharashtra?
The Centre’s decision to allow the export of 99,150 metric tonnes of onion to Bangladesh, Bhutan, Bahrain, Mauritius, Sri Lanka and the United Arab Emirates is aimed at quelling the outrage among the farmers in north Maharashtra—a mid-way course correction in view of the Lok Sabha elections.
Ever since the December 2023 ban on exports, onion farmers in Nashik district have protested against it. Outside the weekly market in Sogras village in Chandvad taluka, farmers criticised the BJP-led central government’s flip flops on onion.

Plea in HC challenging stateâs decision excluding private schools from RTE seats
A writ petition has been recently filed in the Bombay High Court challenging the notification that amended rules under Right To Education (RTE) Act by Maharashtra government declaring that private schools having a government-run school within 1-km area will not be obligated to admit children under the RTE quota.
Prior to the said amendment, it was mandatory for self-financed and private schools to have a 25 percent quota for students from socio-economically backward sections. Pending hearing of the case, the petitioners sought stay on operation of the said notification.

Panel on sacred groves of the country held in Mumbai
Amid the ongoing international mother Earth day celebrations this week, the New Acropolis Cultural Organisation of India on Sunday organised a panel on theme of ‘Learning From the Sacred Groves of India’, which saw the attendance of historians and environmentalists including author Dr. Nanditha Krishna and the director of New Acropolis India, Yaron Barzilay.
With rapid urbanisation and encroaching posing a grave threat to the country’s ancient forests, Krishna, along with her team, has been engaged in the restoration and preservation of the sacred groves.

Mumbai police book 25 persons over Rs 62 crore to APMC scam
Police have registered a case against 25 office-bearers of the Mumbai Agriculture Produce Market Committee at Vashi in Navi Mumbai for allegedly indulging in irregularities leading to losses of more than Rs 62 crore to the APMC, an official said on Monday.
From 2008 to 2013, the accused had taken certain decisions which allegedly resulted in these losses, he said.
During a development phase of the APMC, the accused had distributed galas (shops) admeasuring 4,43,391.66 square feet of area to 466 persons and charged them a reduced rate Rs 600 per sqft instead of (the applicable rate) of Rs 2,000 per sqft, the official from APMC police station said.
Hence, they allegedly caused a revenue loss of Rs 62,07,48,324 to the APMC, he said.

In the past one month, two cases of manual scavenging were reported in the city. In the first, three members of a family lost their lives after entering a tank of a public toilet at Ambujwadi on March 21.

Elgaar Parishad case: HC grants temporary bail to accused Sagar Gorkhe to attend brotherâs wedding
The Bombay High Court recently granted temporary bail from May 1 to 4 to Elgaar Parishad accused Sagar Gorkhe for attending his brother’s wedding.
A division bench of Justices Ajey S Gadkari and Shyam C Chandak on April 24 passed an order in appeal by Gorkhe argued through senior advocate Mihir Desai, challenging rejection of temporary bail plea by the special court designated under National Investigation Agency (NIA) Act.

Citizens sound concerns as BMC plans pedestrian friendly pathway between Mantralya and Badhwar Park
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has launched a project to develop a pedestrian-friendly stretch between Mantralaya and Badhwar Park. Mumbai Police busts interstate child selling racket, doctor held
The Mumbai police on Sunday busted an interstate child selling racket spanning three states — Maharashtra, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh – and arrested seven persons while three others have been detained. The seven arrested accused include a doctor who allegedly worked as a middleman in one case as per police.
In all, the police said the accused have claimed to have sold 14 children over the past two years aged between five days to nine months.

What is the Mahadev betting app case actor Sahil Khan got detained for ?
A probe is underway against actor Sahil Khan and 31 other individuals in the Mahadev betting app case and Khan has been detained by the Special Invesitgation Team. The size of the scam is about Rs 15,000 crore, according to the first information report (FIR) registered by the police in the case.
The probe was launched into the alleged illegal transactions between certain financial and real estate firms in the state and the promoters of the controversial Mahadev betting app. So far, one person has been arrested in the case and along with Khan, 31 other individuals are being investigated against. As per the police, bank accounts, mobile phones, laptops and technical equipment of those involved in the scam are under scrutiny.

Actor Sahil Khan detained by SIT from Chhattisgarh in Mahadev betting app case
The special investigation team of Mumbai cyber cell has detained actor Sahil Khan from Chhattisgarh in connection with the Mahadev betting app case, an official was quoted as saying by PTI on Sunday. Sahil Khan was apprehended from Jagdalpur in Chhattisgarh on Saturday following the rejection of his pre-arrest bail plea by Bombay High Court. Khan was interrogated by the SIT earlier on April 13 in connection with the case. Khan is known for movies like ‘Style' and ‘Excuse Me'.
