A man aged in his 60s has died in hospital after being discovered with serious head injuries on a Wexford street in the early hours of this morning.

The man, who was living locally, was discovered by passers-by unconscious and bleeding heavily on George’s Street in the town centre at around 2am this morning. They immediately called for an ambulance and were required to give the man CPR on the footpath as his pulse became weaker and weaker.

Eventually, an ambulance arrived and paramedics administered medical attention to the man on the side of the street before he was rushed to Wexford General Hospital.

Sadly, a short time later he was pronounced dead. The man’s remains were set to be removed to University Hospital Waterford this morning for a full post mortem examination to be carried out.

Wexford gardaí cordoned off George’s Street for a time and a full technical examination of the scene was carried out.

While initially, gardaí stated that nothing was being ruled out and it was unclear whether the man had been assaulted or if he simply lost his balance and fell, later on Monday morning, they were in a position to offer an update.

“We have now carried out a full review of CCTV footage from the area and I can confirm that we’re ruling out any foul play,” Supt Jarlath Duffy of Wexford Garda Station said.

"We’re treating the incident as a tragic accident and we’re confident that there was no foul play involved.”

The man’s death was a source of shock within Wexford town this morning as people went about their business, and condolences poured in for the man’s family on their tragic loss.
