Imtiaz Ali recalls the retro premiere of Amar Singh Chamkila at Liberty Cinema

Imtiaz Ali and Diljit Dosanjh decided to recreate the nostalgic charm of old-time premieres for Amar Singh Chamkila at Liberty Cinema, opting for an 80s dress code. Imtiaz shared that they wanted to relive the nostalgia of old premieres, surrounded by friends and family, rather than making it a media event.
Shedding light on the planning of Amar Singh Chamkila's starry premiere night, Imtiaz told Zoom, "It began shooting in Liberty Theatre. When we were shooting, Diljit and I decided that we should have a premiere like old time and we should do it in a theatre like Liberty Cinema. We've seen pictures of old premieres on the walls of Liberty. We were like, Why can't we do something like this? We'll wear old-fashioned clothes; the dress code will be in the 80s."
Imtiaz further added, "We did all of that for us. It's the greatest theatre of nostalgia. It was an extension of friends and family. We didn't really want to make it feel like a media event. It was an event for ourselves. There was a warmth that we felt. Chamkila's family was there; his first was there; Amarjot and Chamkila's son were there. When the screening got over, his wife hugged me."
Imtiaz also mentioned that Diljit's character in the film is complex, with actions that can be open to judgment: "He's a grey character. He has done a lot of things that can be judged."
