Tributes have been paid to a "much loved" amateur rugby player who died on the field after suffering a severe brain injury.

Dad-of- three Cory Heather took a blow to the head while playing for Beachlands Maraetai Club in Auckland, New Zealand, on Saturday. The construction worker was rushed to hospital but died a few hours later, Wales online reports.

Heather was kneed in the head during a collision after he caught the ball. He fell unconscious and was given CPR on the field.

A rescue helicopter was scrambled to the scene and the 33-year-old was flown to Auckland City Hospital in critical condition. Doctors found he had suffered a severe brain injury.

He later passed away surrounded by his family and friends on Sunday evening.

Friends of Cory's family have described him as a "bright spark" and "hands on" Dad to Stevie, Benji and Louie.

Describing what happened to New Zealand publication Stuff, Beachlands resident Gareth Price said: "He had caught the ball upright. A guy came through and tackled him. There was no malice in it, it was a good, hard tackle, it was a good, hard game

"We didn't realise how serious it was, then they started doing CPR and we were like - what the hell is happening?

"When you see CPR, you know it's serious."

In a statement, Beachlands Rugby Club president James Gemmell said: "Cory was a much-loved member of the Senior Under 85kg team, the Club and wider community.

"The club is heartbroken by Cory's passing. His family, friends and teammates, all have our love and support.

"We understand the accident will have been traumatic for many involved, including the opposition, match officials and spectators."

New Zealand Rugby Union CEO Mark Robinson also shared the organisation's "deepest condolences".

"Please know that all of New Zealand Rugby is with you," he said in a statement.

A fundraiser has been posted on the Givealittle website, to raise funds for Heather's partner Rachel and his three children.

Over $142,000 has already been raised on Tuesday.
