The person who laid the foundation of indian cinema was Dadasaheb Phalke, who was the first director-producer of indian cinema.

Dadasaheb Phalke started indian cinema in the year 1913. The government of india instituted the 'Dada Saheb Phalke Award' in his memory. This award is given to those people who do their work best on small and big screen. Who was Dadasaheb Phalke, how did he get the idea of cinema, there is an interesting story behind it.

Dadasaheb Phalke's family background

Dadasaheb Phalke was born on 30 april 1870 in Trimbak district of Nashik city of Maharashtra. Phalke's real name was Dhundhiraj Govind Phalke who belonged to a Marathi Brahmin family. His father Govind Sadashiv Phalke was a well-known scholar of Nashik and he also taught many sciences to his son Dhundhiraj Govind. Phalke was interested in art since childhood and wanted to do something in the field of art.

Phalke took admission in JJ school of Art in 1885 and after completing about 5 years of study from there, took admission in raja Shyachirao's Kala Bhavan of vadodara in 1890. Here Phalke learned painting and photography. After this he started working in photography itself.

Dadasaheb Phalke was married in 1885, but when he started doing photography, soon after in 1900, his wife and child died and he had to leave the work. Phalke was devastated by the departure of his wife and child, but when he came out of this shock, he started thinking about working again.
