A drunk driver kit and killed a 13-year-old by on the pavement before returning to the scene and trying to prevent kind strangers who tried to save him.

Teenager Kaylan Hippsley was mowed down by Harley Whiteman, 19, at around 6.15pm on February 29 as he was standing outside a Co-op store with his friends. The "cheeky chappie" was rushed into hospital but died later as a result of multiple fatal injuries from the horror hit and run.

Whiteman tried to hinder a hero student nurse who was performing CPR on Kaylan whilst he lay dying in the road, after his Ford Fiesta mounted the pavement. It struck the teenager causing him to be thrown into the junction of a one-way street, in Brecon Road, Hirwaun, South Wales, Wales Online reports.

A sentencing hearing at Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court on Tuesday heard Kaylan and three of his friends were seen on CCTV standing outside the Co-op store. He was wearing a light blue-grey hoodie and his hood was up.

Kaylan's friends spotted a Ford Fiesta travelling at speed, with some witnesses estimating the vehicle was travelling between 40mph and 60mph. A Citroen car was heading in the opposite direction with parked cars causing a narrow gap. Despite this Whiteman tried to force his way through, swerving to the left and the right in an attempt to avoid the oncoming car.

Whiteman then took the same loop and drove past the scene, as Kaylan was attended to by members of the public. He was seen by a man who recognised him, but he revved his engine and sped off when the man tried to take a picture of him.

Whiteman then drove back to his home nearby and his two passengers got out of the car and returned to the scene of the collision, and he made his way there shortly later.

It is reported that Whiteman then got in the way of the student nurse. He said: "Do you think I give a f*** about this kid on the floor? Why the f*** don't you all just leave him and stop doing that."

Bystanders tried to move Whiteman away as he became agitated and shouted at a man. He responded "I don't know what you're talking about... I haven't got a car, I don't even drive." The defendant also offered a man a fight, as Kaylan lay dying in the road.

Cops rushed to the scene and Whiteman had to be restrained as he was arrested, with police believing him to be extremely intoxicated. Ms Cox said the defendant was abusive towards police and members of the public. She added that he showed no remorse for what he had done, saying.: "It was a f****** good show".

Whiteman refused to give a roadside breath test and provide a sample of breath and blood. When interviewed by police, Whiteman made no comment, but he later told a probation worker that he had taken a line of cocaine and had drank four pints of lager earlier that night.

CCTV footage revealed that Whiteman had been to a local pub, where the landlord described the defendant as intoxicated and told him to leave because of his behaviour.

Kaylan tragically died in hospital on March 3 having never regained consciousness. The primary school pupil at Aberdare Community School was a keen football and rugby player. Kaylan, who lived with his grandmother, after his dad died, when he was just six, was described as a "cheeky chappie" who was "polite, creative and lovely".

In a victim personal statement read to the court, Kaylan's devastated sister said her heart "shattered into a million pieces," when she was given the news that her brother had been killed.

Olivia said: "There are no words I can put to properly describe the sheer horror caused to me and my family and writing this down caused unimaginable pain... Every time I tried I was completely overwhelmed.

She added: "No real justice can be served today. Harley Whiteman has taken something from our family that can never be given back. We live in fear we will have to pass him in the street but we hope it will be a long time before we have to deal with this."

Kaylan's devastated grandmother Kay Hippsley added: "I am unable to go home to the family home. I have only been out to the hospital and Kaylan's funeral. I feel as well Kaylan's life ending prematurely mine has too. I have no purpose to my life and I don't know how I will carry on.

"I am so angry and devastated, I cannot put into words how this has affected my life and family. I cannot live with this or find it in my heart to forgive Harley Whiteman. This will be a small chapter in his life but Kaylan's life is over and our family will carry the grief and heartache to our dying days."

Whiteman, pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving and failing to provide a specimen.

He was sentenced to six years and nine months detention in a young offenders' institute. He was disqualified from driving for a period of eight years and four months.
