Palestine Shines As Guest Of Honor At The First Papyrus Cinema Festival in Egypt

Cairo welcomes the inaugural Papyrus Flash Cinema Festival, opening at 7 PM tomorrow, May 1st, under the sponsorship of the Egyptian Ministry of Culture.

Hosted at the Russian Cultural Center's Tchaikovsky Theater, this festival pays homage to the esteemed late director Atef El Tayeb. Running from May 1-7, 2024, the event is chaired by notable writer Abdel Rahim Kamal.

Azza Abou El Yazeed, the founder and general director of the festival, announced that the opening night will honor acclaimed actress Sawsan Badr, with beloved actress Lebleba gracing the closing ceremony. The festival boasts a prestigious panel, including jury president Magdi Ahmed Ali, alongside musician Khaled Hammad, actor Mohamed Fahim, photographer Samir Farag, and Syrian artist Firas Naanaa.

The festival promises a culturally rich program with 16 participating countries. Highlights include a day dedicated to Russian cinema on May 3rd, British cultural contributions on May 4th, a showcase from Egypt’s National Cinema Center on May 2nd, and student films from the Cinema Institute on May 5th.

Palestine receives special recognition as the guest of honor with dedicated events on May 6th.

The festival will also honor the legacies of several luminaries from the art world, including Ashraf Musilhy, Ahmed Samy Al Adl, Nahed Farid Shawqi, and others. Additional tributes will recognize media figure Salma El Shamaa, cinematographer Said Shimi, directors Omar Abdel Aziz and Hany Lashin, writer Nasser Abdel Rahman, poet Ibrahim Abdel Fattah, Father Boutros Daniel, Palestinian director Fayeq Jaradeh, and Russian orientalist Vladimir Belyakov.

El Yazeed thanked Murad Gatin, Director of the Russian Cultural Centers in Egypt, and Sherif Gad, Director of Cultural Activities, for their support in hosting the festival's significant ceremonies at the Russian House.
