Jazz Homers Again as Marlins Get Swept By Nationals

MIAMI, FLORIDA – Jazz Chisholm once again provided an offensive spark and once again it wasn’t enough as the Miami Marlins continued to be mired in a losing streak.

Chisholm went deep for the second consecutive game and his 2 run homer was all the offense the Marlins’ had in their 7-2 loss to the Washington Nationals Monday night at Loan Depot Park.

Taking a look at the numbers, Chisholm is near the top in several offensive categories for the struggling Marlins.

He now has a team-leading 17 RBI and 5 stolen bases.

He’s also second with a .245 batting average and second with four home runs.

After being swept by the nationals, the Marlins are a major league-worst 6-24 and look to turn things around tonight when they open a three-game home stand against the Colorado Rockies.

WNBA

Fresh off her postseason run in the Women’s Chinese Basketball Association, Jonquel Jones is back in training camp with the New York Liberty and ready to make a return to the WNBA finals.

Jones and the Liberty opened training camp this week at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

The team returns seven players from the 2023 roster, including the starting-five that led the Liberty to its best record in franchise history at 32-8, and the WNBA Finals for the first time since 2002.

The core of Jones, reigning MVP Breanna Stewart and Sabrina Ionescu will be joined by a class of newcomers highlighted by 11th pick Marqueshia Davis – who spent the last season under Coach Yo at Ole Miss.

In 2023, Jones averaged 11.3 points, 8.4 rebounds and 1.3 blocks per game. 

Those numbers went up in the postseason to 16.8 points, 11.6 rebounds and 2.4 blocks per game, with eight double-doubles.

Jones was also the MVP of the Commissioner’s Cup championship game with 16 points and 15 rebounds in a win over the Las Vegas Aces.

The Liberty’s 2024 season tips off on May 14 on the road against the Washington mystics.

Track and Field

We know the BTC World Athletics Relay serves as a qualifier for the Paris Olympics, but teams will be racing for a bit more this weekend at the Thomas A. Robinson Stadium. 

The top eight teams in each event will also be awarded prize money. 

The first place team will receive $40,000, second place receives $20,000 and third place $10,000.

Fourth-place finishers get $8,000, fifth place – $6,000, sixth place $4,000, seventh – $3,000, and eighth $2,000.

If a team breaks a world record, an additional $50,000 will be awarded, subject to record ratification.

The World Athletics Relays will feature nearly 900 athletes from 54 countries in Nassau on 4-5 May. 

There will be 32 men’s and 30 women’s teams in the 4x100m, along with 32 men’s, 27 women’s, and 30 mixed teams in the 4x400m.

NCAA Track and Field

FSU freshman Laquan Ellis set a new personal best of 15.44m at the Payton Jordan Invitational in Stanford, California.

It was the number 4 jump in FSU history and beat his previous personal best by over a foot. 

He also qualified for the ACC Championships, May 9-11 in Atlanta, Georgia.
