Drivers tend to ease off the gas pedal when there’s an automated speed enforcement (ASE) camera around, city staff say following a review of data collected during the devices’ first six months in operation.

The automated cameras’ presence in select school zones have resulted in an average speed reduction of 20 per cent, or 8 km/h, the release states.

“We’ve been monitoring the performance of these ASEs and we are glad to see that the data demonstrates that the program is effectively enhancing road safety and promoting responsible driving habits in Guelph. This is a good thing,” said Steve Anderson, the city’s manager of transportation engineering in the release.

The data analysis relates to the first eight ASE locations, with four beginning on Aug. 1 and the next batch starting on Nov. 1. The city program involves four cameras, which are moved to different locations every three months.

In addition to the data analysis, city officials announced ASE locations and dates through July of next year.

Currently, the devices can be found in front of:

  • Ecole Arbour Vista Public School on McCann Street
  • William C. Winegard Public School on Lee Street
  • Central Public School on Dublin Street North
  • June Avenue Public School on June Avenue.

Beginning Aug. 1, the ASEs will be moved to:

  • Resurrection Christian Academy School on Knightswood Boulevard
  • Sacred Heart Catholic School on Huron Street
  • Gateway Public School on Gateway Drive
  • Jean Little Public School on Youngman Drive.

Future locations identified in the release are, as of Nov. 1, Ptarmigan Drive in front of Kortright Hills PS, Waterloo Avenue in front of Guelph Montessori School, Emma Street in front of Holy Rosary CS and Scottsdale Drive in front of Priory Park PS and École St. René Goupil School.
