BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — At this week’s Rotary Club meeting, BRPD Chief Thomas Morse Jr. gave an update after his first 100 days, focusing on three keywords — gather, gain and give.

Morse gave a wrap-up of the changes in the Baton Rouge Police Department, from analyzing crime trends, implementing more cameras with AI technology, increasing license plate readers and a new unit that works with the district attorney’s office.

“Fresh into my new role, I saw a need for the special investigation division to house these different divisions we already had under one umbrella to go after this group violence,” Morse said.

Morse said the new unit is his most proud accomplishment, saying it has started showing results.

“That division that I created back in March started off the arrest and investigation that the district attorney’s office was able to get grand jury indictments on just a few weeks ago with this group called the Bleedas,” Morse said.

As Morse continues to lead BRPD, he said a top priority will continue to be to listen and work closely with the community, especially to tackle crime.

“We can’t police our way out of all of the issues, so we have to work with the community. We have to work with different groups reaching kids when they’re younger so that they don’t go down these paths and join these groups and go down this path of violent crime,” Morse said.
