Welcome to the new era of college football. Former Michigan Wolverines cornerback/wide receiver Amorion Walker, who committed to Ole Miss in January after entering the transfer portal, has now committed to returning to Ann Arbor.

Walker was a depth piece at both corner and wide receiver last season at Michigan. Many expected him to compete for the second cornerback position this year after making the transition from wide receiver. However, he struggled in the 2023 spring game and Michigan earned a commitment from Josh Wallace, the eventual starter at corner. With the emergence of a few other younger defensive backs, Walker found himself buried on the depth chart with a shot at his confidence.

That led to his eventual decision to enter the transfer portal, finding a short-term home at Ole Miss. Meanwhile, Michigan had a few players of its own enter the portal including corner DJ Waller, and receivers Cristian Dixon and Karmello English. Suddenly, the Wolverines had glaring needs at both the positions Walker has played in Ann Arbor.

Walker now has a clear opportunity to fill a hole in either position. He played in five games at defensive back as a sophomore in 2023 and recorded three tackles and a half tackle for loss. As a freshman, Walker appeared in six games — five at receiver and one at defensive back. He made one catch for four yards on the offensive side.

As a former three-star recruit and the No. 526 player in the 2022 class, Walker made a lot of noise in his first two seasons in Ann Arbor for his athleticism. That’s been apparent with the positional flexibility he’s had on either side of the ball to this point in his career.

The Wolverines also earned a commitment from Youngstown State transfer wide receiver C.J. Charleston on Wednesday. It shall be interesting to see how that impacts Sherrone Moore’s plans with Walker back in the fold with depth needs at both defensive back and wide receiver after the transfers Michigan had at either position in the spring window.
