John F. Kennedy High School in Tamuning received a $1,000 Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, STEM, scholarship to support its aviation and robotics programs.

Lt. Gov. Joshua Tenorio announced the award, which came from the National Lieutenant Governors’ Association’s STEM scholarship.

NLGA awarded JFK High with the amount as part of a national call for applications to fund STEM programming and curriculum in schools.

“I’m glad to see funding to support the JFK Air Force JROTC program, where the NLGA support not only furthers STEM programming but also helps to prepare students for a future career in the military or otherwise,” Tenorio said in a statement. “Guam plays an important role in national defense, with the highest military enlistment per capita in the country, and this funding helps further interest in the skills of tomorrow.”

Guam’s STEM scholarship winner, JFK High School, will use its STEM scholarship to expand the Aviation and Robotics programs in its Air Force JROTC Program, according to a press release from Adelup.

The school’s aviation club teaches cadets the importance of drone technology, mapping geography, coding, drone, and flight safety.

The school’s robotics team also helps cadets create, design, and program robots to further their knowledge and understanding of STEM concepts.

NLGA opened the application period for the STEM Scholarship Program in February 2024. The application process was competitive, with NLGA receiving more than 200 requests for STEM funding from schools in 28 states and territories.

A total of 12 schools in 12 states were awarded $500 to $1,000 for STEM-related expenses.

“As the seconds-in-command in state and territorial government, lieutenant governors are uniquely poised to lead on STEM education,” NLGA Executive Director Julia Brossart said in a statement. “By supporting STEM-related activities in schools across the country, we can encourage a long-term interest and passion in STEM education in America’s youth.”

The scholarship program is administered by NLGA, the nonpartisan nonprofit association for the nation’s seconds-in-command, and sponsored by ACT, the education and career readiness nonprofit.
