BACONTON, Ga. (WALB) - The next generation of first responders will soon get an early start on their careers in Baconton.

Later this year, Baconton Community Charter School will be launching the first Emergency Medical Technician training program in all of Southwest Georgia.

“We’re just excited for the partnership. Excited for the opportunity for our students. It’s going to be a good groundbreaking opportunity for everybody, " CTA Director Wendy Courtney said.

In the fall of 2025, high school seniors enrolled in the Health Science cluster pathway at Baconton Community Charter School will have the chance to get collegiate-level E.M.T training.

Wendy Courtney says this program will expose eligible students to the endless possibilities within the medical field while addressing a shortage in the industry.

“We’re just excited for the partnership, excited for the opportunity for our students. It’s going to be a good groundbreaking opportunity for everybody, " Courtney said.

Amanda Williams says as a healthcare pathway instructor, she’s happy her students can take part in this huge opportunity.

“This will be the first opportunity that will open the door for a career path,” Williams said.

Once they complete the EMT program here at Baconton, they’ll be able to sit for the national registry, obtain certification, and potential employment as soon as they graduate,” Williams said.

Rising seniors, Mara Foster says they are excited to be the first class in all of Southwest Georgia to take advantage of this special EMT training.

" I’m really thankful to Ms. Amanda and Ms. Wendy. I know Ms. Amanda has gone through a lot right now to get certified for this. I know it’s kind of stressful but she’s willing to do it for us. I’m very grateful for that,” Foster said.

Brodie Lamb believes this EMT partnership will help him get a head start in reaching his long-term career goals.

“Through college, I’d like to work as an EMT and go to mortuary science school afterward,” Lamb said.

Wendy Courtney says she is grateful to AmeriPro for partnering with Baconton Community Charter School and hopes this program will continue to expose students to different avenues within the medical field.
