Markham man arrested in connection with cinema shootings

Four movie theatres, including two in Richmond Hill, Vaughan, were damaged in the shootings last January

A Markham man has been charged in connection with four shootings at cinemas across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), including York Region.

On Jan. 24, 2024, police were called to a theatre in the area of Highway 7 and East Beaver Creek in Richmond Hill after an employee arrived for work and found the glass front entry doors had been shot, a York Regional Police news release said. The same day, a similar call occurrred at a theatre at Highway 7 and Weston Road in Vaughan.

Investigators believe the same suspects are involved in both occurrences in York Region and in similar shootings that occurred at cinemas in Toronto and Peel Region on the same night, police said.

On Tuesday, April 30, 2024, a suspect was charged. Further suspects are being sought and the investigation is ongoing.

Andrew Douglas, 27, is charged with: 

  • weapons dangerous
  • possession of property under $5,000
  • possession of property over $5,000
  • discharge firearm (x4)
  • careless use of firearm (x4)
  • use firearm (x4)
  • mischief over $5,000 (x2)
  • mischief under $5,000 (x2)
  • unauthorized possession of a firearm (x2)
  • possession of loaded firearm
  • conspiracy
  • intimidation
