HATTIESBURG — Southern Miss baseball is at home this weekend for a crucial Sun Belt Conference series against Coastal Carolina.

The Golden Eagles (28-17, 12-9 Sun Belt) are weathering a storm of pitching injuries but rallied for a 5-4 victory over New Orleans on Tuesday. Gabe Broadus delivered the go-ahead hit in the eighth inning and Colby Allen was stupendous out of the bullpen to shut the door in the final two innings.

Coastal Carolina (27-17, 11-10) is one game behind Southern Miss in the conference standings but has an RPI of 23 to Southern Miss' 46. The Chanticleers have lost five straight games and six of their last seven. Last weekend, they were swept at home by Troy while being outscored 34-13. Coastal Carolina has a powerful offense though that's scored 398 runs, the 12th most in the country. Third baseman Sam Antonacci is fourth in the country in on-base percentage (.550).

Southern Miss got another strong start from Nico Mazza, who went 6.2 innings with three earned runs allowed. Carson Paetow and Ozzie Pratt both homered, and Davis Gillespie reached base thrice. The win clinched Southern Miss' 22nd consecutive 30-win season.

Game 3: Southern Miss 6, Coastal Carolina 5

Southern Miss earned its second sweep of the season in a strange fashion. The game only lasted six and a half innings because Coastal Carolina had a flight to catch. There was a 42-minute rain delay in the third inning, two injury stoppages and two replay challenges that didn't help the Chanticleers race against the clock. Colby Allen recorded the final out with a strikeout while Coastal Carolina had the tying run on second base.
