The No. 6 Oregon State Beavers visit the Washington State Cougars Sunday afternoon in the finale of a three-game series at Bailey-Brayton Field in Pullman, Washington.

The teams have split the first two games.

After opening the series with a 2-1 victory, Oregon State dropped Saturday’s encore, 10-9, after a furious ninth-inning rally came up short.

The Beavers entered the ninth trailing 10-2, but scored seven runs and sent the tying run to the plate twice. But after Elijah Hainline hit a one-out three-run homer, Mason Guerra and Jabin Trosky followed with back-to-back ground outs to end the comeback bid.

The loss dropped Oregon State into fourth place in the Pac-12 conference, 2 1/2 games behind first-place Arizona and one-half game behind second-place Oregon and Utah.

Probable starters: RHP Eric Segura (5-1, 4.85) vs. RHP Duke Brotherton (5-5, 4.00)

This and that: Segura is making his 12th start and seventh in conference play. The 6-foot-2 freshman opened his career by winning five of his first seven starts. But he’s 0-1 in his last four outings, during which he has lasted past the fourth inning just once. ... Sophomore outfielder Gavin Turley went 2 for 4 with four RBIs Saturday, hitting a solo home run in the eighth and a two-run double in the ninth. He has two homers in the series, giving him 14 this season and 28 in his career, which is tied for sixth-most in program history with Al Hunsinger and Adley Rutschman. ... Micah McDowell started for the second consecutive game at designated hitter after missing an extended stretch with an oblique strain, finishing 1 for 3 with two walks. He had a run-scoring double during the ninth inning rally. ... Travis Bazzana went 1 for 3 with two walks in Game 2. The junior second baseman has reached base in all 46 games he’s played this season. ... Mason Guerra, who is trying to snap out of the worst funk of his career, did not start Saturday for the first time this season. He entered the game on defense in the bottom of the seventh and logged two at-bats, finishing 0 for 2. He’s now hitless in his last 32 at-bats. ... The Beavers are just 2-8 in their last 10 road games and 4-9 overall on the road this season. ... A win today would give OSU a series victory for the sixth time in eight Pac-12 series.
