In a significant development, Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered nuclear drills amid the ongoing conflict with Ukraine.
The decision comes amidst heightened tensions in the region, raising concerns about the escalation of the conflict.
Russia’s defense ministry announced that President Putin told the Russian military to practice using nuclear weapons in drills with the navy and troops close to Ukraine.
Putin has been talking more about nuclear weapons since the conflict in Ukraine started. In February, during his speech to the nation, he said there’s a “real” chance of nuclear war.
The minister said, During the exercise, a set of measures will be taken to practise the preparation and use of non-strategic nuclear weapons. The exercises would take place “in the near future” and were aimed at ensuring Russia’s territorial integrity in the face of “threats by certain Western officials.
Officials in the West are getting more worried about the Kremlin’s talk about nuclear weapons during the fighting in Ukraine. Putin often mentions Russia’s nuclear strategy, which is making them more concerned.
Though, Last year, Russia decided not to officially accept the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty anymore. Also, it withdrew from an important agreement with the United States that aimed to reduce the number of arms.
As tensions continue to mount, the world watches closely as Russia conducts these nuclear drills amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
