CHICAGO, Ill. (WTVO) — Just hours away from the 2024 NHL Draft Lottery, could the Chicago Blackhawks and General Manager Kyle Davidson recreate history?

Winning this year’s lottery would be the first time since the NHL Draft was created in 1963 that the Blackhawks would have the first pick in back-to-back seasons. They would become the sixth team in NHL history to have back-to-back firsts joining: Montreal Canadians 68-69, New York Islanders 72-73, Quebec Nordiques 89-91, Ottawa Senators 95-96, and Edmonton Oilers 2010-2012.

The draft, taking place at 5:30 pm CT on ESPN, sees the Blackhawks currently holding the second overall pick. However, they have a 13.5% chance of winning the draft lottery and stealing the first overall pick from the last-place San Jose Sharks.

San Jose finished the year with 19-54-9 which saw them finish dead last in the league. The rebuilding Blackhawks finished with five more points than the Sharks, finishing the year with a 23-53-6 record.

Last year, the Hawks finished with a 26-49-7 record which put them third last in the league behind the struggling Columbus Blue Jackets and last-place Anaheim Ducks.

The Hawks held worse lottery odds last year at 11.5%. Still, the Hawks managed to beat the odds and win the lottery, moving over Anaheim which held a 25.5% chance of winning.

But can the Chicago Blackhawks defy the odds again and win a chance at Boston University forward Macklin Celebrini?

Celebrini, who is the top-ranked prospect in this year’s draft, recorded 64 points through 38 games with Boston University only behind former Philadelphia Flyer, now Anaheim Duck, Cutter Gauthier, who notched 65 points for Boston College.

San Jose prospect Will Smith led the NCAA with 71 points through 41 games with Boston College. Despite only coming in third in the scoring race, Celebrini led all draft eligible NCAA players in points.

This year could also see the Hawks draft in the top three in back-to-back seasons for the first time since drafting Jonathan Toews third overall in 2006 and Patrick Kane first overall in 2007.

Toews and Kane both had a massive role in the Hawks’ dominance in the 2010s, during which the Blackhawks took home three championships.
