2 people die after south Sacramento house fire
SACRAMENTO – Officials say two people have died after a house fire in south Sacramento late Wednesday morning.
Sacramento Fire crews arrived at the scene just before 11 a.m. along Niantic Way and found a heavy fire at the back of the single-story home and smoke coming from the front.
Firefighters say one person was found dead inside the home. Another victim was pulled from the home, received CPR and was taken to the hospital. That person later died, Sacramento Fire officials said.
In the rear, firefighters said there were several cars, including one that caught fire. The wind exposed the fire to the vehicles and another home just behind them, but crews quickly prevented it from spreading to the vehicles and the other home.
"This wind was obviously a concern for our crews but they were able to get the hose around the back very quickly and knock down that fire," said Capt. Justin Sylvia, spokesperson for the Sacramento Fire Department.
Lily, who asked CBS13 not to publish her last name, lives next door and provided CBS13 with video from her surveillance cameras showing the fire break out in the back of her neighbor's home Wednesday morning.
The large flames can be seen nearly spreading to her backyard.
"I was asleep, sleeping in and my aunt came in and woke me and said there's a fire next door, we have to go," Lily said.
Sacramento police helped with the initial investigation into the fire, but Sacramento Fire has since determined that the incident was not malicious or intentionally set. The exact cause of the fire is still undetermined, however.
There were other tenants in the home at the time of the fire. They were able to make it out safely and are being questioned.
The home suffered extensive damage and is no longer livable.
Officials have not released the names of either person who died.
