Donald Trump biopic, ‘The Apprentice’ premiered at the 77th Cannes Film Festival on Monday, earning a eight minute standing ovation.
Sebastian Stan, actor, plays as a young Trump, follows the future president as he rises to power as a New York businessman in the 1980s under the influence of his attorney Roy Cohn, played by Jeremy Strong.
The film is directed by Ali Abbasi, Iranian-Danish filmmaker Abbasi and written by Gabe Sherman.
Several surprising moments in the movie, a scene depicting Trump’s alleged rape of his first wife Ivana and a surgery room sequence showing Trump getting liposuction got a lot of attention from the audience.
The Cannes crowd applauded while the final credits were shown with “Yes Sir, I Can Boogie,” by Baccara, played in the background.
The crowd excitedly clapped, giving a standing ovation for almost eight minutes, for Stan, playing the role of Trump in the movie.
The loudest applause was for Stan for his transformative performance as Trump. The crowd enthusiastically cheered and clapped, staying on their feet for nearly eight minutes, though many were spotted ducking out of the theater by the four-minute mark.
‘The Apprentice’ still does not have a U.S. distributor in place, although it sold earlier in the Cannes festival to StudioCanal for the U.K. and Ireland, where it will be released theatrically later this year.
