Blanchett was wearing a black-white-green dress. Several people suggested that the actress wore the dress to show solidarity with the people of Palestine as her dress included black, white, and green colors which in the backdrop of the red carpet was similar to the flag of Palestine.

The Arab Cinema Center (ACC), in collaboration with the International Emerging Film Talent Association (IEFTA) and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), organized a fully-booked panel titled ‘Displacement: Cinematic Perspectives’ on May 20th at the 77th Cannes Film Festival’s Plage des Palmes.

During the panel, journalist Hadley Gamble led a compelling discussion with UNHCR goodwill ambassador and actress Cate Blanchett, filmmaker Daniela Repas, and photographer Barat Ali Batoor, with the moderation of the well-known Arab host Raya Abirached.

The conversation aimed to highlight the power of cinema in portraying and addressing the challenges of displacement.

Blanchett emphasized the importance of giving proper representation to refugees on screen, stating, “People who are displaced have a voice, they have stories that are incredible and inspiring. I’m always surprised as to why more films don’t address this directly or indirectly,” and added, “the more we exclude these voices from our narratives, the more we’re othering them.”
