Man wins £1m lottery jackpot every year for life – but gives it up for one reason

The lucky lottery-winner, Silver Gutierrez Figueredopaid £38.10 for his ticket but it was money well spent as it a lucky win that saw him take a huge lump-sum payout

A man won a £1m lottery jackpot for every year of his life after spending just under £40 for the ticket.

Silver Gutierrez Figueredo, from the Western side of Florida, spent $50 (£38.10) on a scratch-off game back in April 2023. The 53-year-old, of Clearwater, hit the jackpot and claimed a million-dollar prize, as reported by the Herald Tribune.


The American lottery winner gave up the yearly income bonus and instead accepted a lump-sum payout of $640,000 (£487k)

The winnings didn’t stop there, however, as lottery officials said the retailer, The Cheveron, also received a $2,000 bonus commission for selling the lucky ticket.

Figueredo isn’t the only person to win big when it comes to this game. According to lottery data, 144 others have won $ 1 million since March of last year.


The game's overall odds of winning something are 1-in-4.5, the Florida Lottery says. The odds of winning a million dollars is 1-in-185,709, the best odds to become a millionaire (before taxes) of any game in the Florida Lottery.

The news comes after the Daily Star reported a waitress' $10m lotto dream quickly turned into a nightmare leading to an attempted kidnap, a shooting and multiple lawsuits.

Tonda Dickerson was working at Waffle House in America when a customer gave her the ticket as a tip. But when the numbers came in six days later, so followed a whole load of trouble.

The then 22-year-old from Alabama was recently divorced and in her late 20s when her life changed forever in 1999. She gave up her job and opted for an annual payout of $375k (£309,000) over 30 years.
