Motorists across Ireland are being warned that using a popular phone mount could result in a fine of up to €1,200 – simply for where it's placed inside the car.

While phone mounts have become a must-have gadget for hands-free navigation and music, police and road safety experts are reminding drivers that poor positioning can break the law.

As part of a road safety campaign, Number 1 Plates interviewed Pete Nelson, 48, a former traffic officer, who says the issue is more widespread than most people realise.

"Phone mounts are incredibly common – we see them in nearly every car. But when they're stuck in the wrong place, especially in the driver's line of sight, they can become a hazard," Pete explained.

"I've stopped drivers who had half their windscreen blocked by a phone holder, often without realising it. If your vision is restricted – even slightly – it's enough for a fine or points."

In Ireland, you could be done on one specific law, carrying one or three penalty points depending on the nature and seriousness of the offence. The Irish Statue Book outlines: Offence consisting of contravention of article 23 - Using a vehicle from which driver has inadequate view of road and traffic.

Windscreens and windows must be kept free from obstructions to vision. That includes anything from sat-navs and dash cams to air fresheners and, crucially, phone mounts. If an officer judges that your device is blocking your view of the road, you could be found guilty of driving without due care and attention.

Drivers are risking:

  • €150 on-the-spot fine
  • Up to €1,200 fine and 3 penalty points for more serious offences
  • Potential impact on insurance if involved in a crash
  • Even higher penalties if an accident occurs as a result

Some motorists also run the risk of violating new mobile phone usage laws, which now encompass almost any physical interaction with a device while driving – this includes adjusting your phone while it's mounted.

They issued four points of advice:

1. Position it Low and to the Side - Phone holders should be placed in the bottom right or left corner of the windscreen – never in the middle – and must not obstruct your view of the road ahead or your mirrors.

2. Safely Use the Dashboard - If you're utilising a dashboard mount, make sure it doesn't obscure your instrument panel, air vents or passenger-side airbags.

3. Prepare Everything Before You Drive - Set up your sat nav or playlist before turning on the engine. Adjusting your phone while on the move is now a serious offence, attracting £200 fines and six penalty points.

4. Maintain a Clear Windscreen - Resist the urge to clutter your windscreen with accessories – even dash cams and air fresheners can become a legal problem if they hinder your view.

A spokesperson for Number 1 Plates added: “Phone mounts are useful, but only when used correctly. Placing them in the wrong spot could block your vision and lead to a fine or even an accident. It’s an easy thing to fix – take a minute to reposition it properly and keep your view of the road clear.”

While these gadgets are meant to make driving safer and easier, misusing them could have the opposite effect. A few inches of bad placement might cost you hundreds – or much worse.
