Multi-state insurance fraud: Sambhal Police files chargesheet against 11 accused

Three months after busting an multi-state insurance fraud gang, which forged documents and manipulated claims, police Thursday filed an 800-page chargesheet against 11 accused persons at the Sambhal district court.

Sambhal Additional Superintendent of Police Anukriti Sharma told The Indian Express that 26 members of the gang, including the 11 who have been chargesheeted, were sent to jail under several FIRs that were registered in Sambhal.

“This started with one case but we have registered 14 cases by far. It is a big gang and soon more people will be arrested. We will also investigate these cases and charge those accused under the gangster act,” she said.

According to officials, the members of the gang used to be in search of those people who were seriously unwell. “They would convince the family and buy insurance policies in the name of such people by showing them healthy and would also pay its premium for a shorter period as these people would eventually die in a short span. After the person’s death, they would claim the amount and distribute it among themselves,” said Sharma.

They filled out claim forms with death certificates and other documents and submitted it to the banks where the deceased had accounts.
